Meeting the challenge of modern health problems
A recent article, published in the New England Journal of medicine, March 2005 issue states that the average life expectancy of Americans may decline by as much as 5 years over the next few decades. Attributed, in part, to a growing epidemic of obesity, this trend of a rapidly, rising prevalence of degenerative diseases is familiar to most modern, American doctors, who are witnessing increasing numbers in problems such as migraine, diabetes, heart disease, chronic pain, digestive system dysfunction, inflammatory diseases and neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis, obesity, dementia and Autism.
Clearly, the majority of health problems facing most of the modern, western world, can be attributed to a variety of causes including toxic environmental pollution, lack rest, unmanaged stress, poor diet, genetic predisposition, misuse of pharmaceuticals and sedentary lifestyle, to name only a few. Despite the fact that these factors play such an important role in the development of modern disease patterns, very few healthcare practitioners actually deal with these problems by either directly treating their cause or effectively counseling their patients in methods to avoid the near inevitable presentation of the aforementioned health problems. The driving force behind our facility, is the challenge of dealing with the scope of these issues "head-on" by stopping them where they start... before they become serious disease or named medical conditions.
Is your annual physical a joke?
One of the most common stories that we hear from our patients (in varying forms) is that they went to an annual physical or decided to visit their doctor out of concern for their health or because of recently becoming aware of some symptoms in their own body. These complaints range from anxiety, depression, chest pain, neck pain, muscle soreness, chronically upset stomach, chronic fatigue, problems in concentration or memory, obesity that is resistant to dietary or exercise changes and even childhood behavioral concerns. These patients typically consult their doctor for answers only to be told that "they are fine" or that their doctor "can't find anything wrong" with them. This is often extremely frustrating, particularly for those whose lives, livelihood and relationships are affected by their growing health problems, lack of energy or increasing pain. When patients such as these find their way to our clinic, we often start by explaining that the unfortunate, lack of success that they have experienced, in trying to solve their problems, has usually come about because they have looked in the wrong place for a means to become healthy. Most annual check-ups, physicals and doctors examinations are specifically designed to discover disease in the human body. Unfortunately, most of the symptoms of degenerative processes in the body, cause functional problems, pain, fatigue and other symptoms, long before they actually become diseases that are detectable in regular doctor's office visits.
Is your doctor leaving your body the way he found it?
Many of us were told by our parents to leave things the way we found them, in an effort to teach us courtesy and manners. Sadly, many doctors simply aim to "clean-up" the symptoms that are most obvious or the reason for your present concerns. Very few practitioners, actually aim to leave you "better" than you were before you began to suffer symptoms. This is one the primary treatment goals at CARE. We don't believe that simply taking away pain, fatigue or symptoms is a service unless the person who enjoys renewed function is actually healthier, more energetic and happier as a result of the process. This is true healthcare, as we see it: Striving to serve and create healthier, happier and more fulfilled human beings.
